What is a steelyard?
The steelyard is a single-beam scale with a moving counterweight. Through its ancient yet brilliant design, a smaller force can measure, neutralize and overcome a heavy load.

The steelyard is a timeless metaphor for balance, efficiency, accuracy and discernment — the highest skills and attributes of Tai Chi. It appears prominently in the writings of early Chinese masters.
“In stillness, be like a steelyard;
move as smoothly as a turning wheel.”
Attributed to Wáng Zōngyuè , c. 1500 CE
